Amsterdam Ale House:
According to Stanley who was a regular customer for more than 50 years:
When Sweeney’s first opened on this site in the 1930’s there were cobblestones on the street and the establishment was fitted with a tin ceiling and stained glass windows from Tiffanys. We lost Stanley some years ago, and the cobblestones are gone too . But the tin ceiling, and the Tiffany windows remain, in this classic New York City pub .
The Upper West Side has changed from the 1930’s. From hardscrabble working class, to a hotbed of political activism in the 60’s and 70‘s, to the family-oriented neighborhood of today. Amsterdam Ale House, tries to stay true to the warmth and familial environment of an old school pub, while adding modern touches (like air conditioning and televisions.)
We serve a menu of traditional American pub fare as well as more modern and healthy dishes. We still think that a great pub menu starts with a great burger and that will never change. In addition, we serve the best hummus in the neighborhood, hormone and anti-biotic free bison burgers, a large selection of salads and, of course, a kid's menu.
The Ale House is proud supporter of the craft beer movement as evidenced by our 31 draft beers featuring a constantly rotating selection of ales and lagers both locally produced and from around the globe. This is complimented by an extensive bottle list with a myriad of styles to sample. We also feature a full bar with a curated wine selection.
We specialize in large groups and can make special arrangements for private parties. And if you sit on the corner of the bar, Stanley’s smiling picture still looks down on you.
We have two sister bars located in Tribeca and the Upper East side of Manhattan.
Church Publick (82 Reade Street, Tribeca) and
Third Avenue Ale House (1644 3rd Avenue) both serve a wide range of draft beers with large seasonal selections. Both bars serve excellent quality food and snacks daily and offer varied wine and cocktail menus.
